AAWAZ Pendle Group

AAWAZ is a voluntary group (a registered charity) with a main base in Hyndburn and a sister group in Pendle.

The name AAWAZ means voice in Urdu and we believe that we are the voice of Women in Hyndburn and Lancashire. We are women volunteers working for the benefit of Asian and other women of the local communities. We provide support and work towards assisting individuals with their self-development to improve their chances to integrate into wider society and to improve the lives of future generations.

AAWAZ firmly believe that women play an important role and it is vital that we should work with women to improve their education, employment, health and housing to assist them to improve the lives of their families. We believe that ‘home is the whole world and that the very first academy for a child is the mother’s lap’. If the mother is well informed then the lives of families would be improved.

The AAWAZ Pendle Group was set up because a number of women from Pendle contacted AAWAZ manager and asked for help. We have our AAWAZ Pendle Worker Kubra Begum who has been assisting women and families over the past 18 months on AAWAZ’s behalf. All our Pendle activities are funded through fundraising and donations.

AAWAZ Pendle Eid Event, November 2007

Sixty five women and twenty children came together to celebrate the Eid event. The programme included awareness and information about health and wellbeing, recitals and belly dancing demonstration from the Tarkheema dancers.

AAWAZ Pendle Eid Party, October 2008

Thirty of our members came together to celebrate Eid and also to talk about why they access AAWAZ Pendle. The event was attended by the AAWAZ Chair person who was very pleased to see and to hear first hand the help that the women and families are receiving through AAWAZ Manager, Coordinator and the Pendle Worker.

The AAWAZ Pendle Group meets twice a week at Christ Church and the emphasis is on assisting women and families, (many of whom are carers and women who experience mental ill health). Our present activities focus on:

• Building confidence

• Improving self esteem

• English language, culture and citizenship

• Help with preparation for Volunteering

• Health and wellbeing

• Swimming

• Social and educational visits

AAWAZ Pendle is striving to help and support the women and families of Nelson and Brierfield and is currently planning a calendar of activities and events to commence January 2009.
